Tucson is a unique city because it sits at the cultural and economic crossroads of the Southwest. The warm weather is a major attraction for many visitors, but it is not the only positive aspect of this city. To get the most out of a trip to this center for culture and history, there are a few things to keep in mind.
- Be aware of the weather. Of course, you have heard the advice to drink plenty of water during the summer months, especially if you plan to be outdoors. But Tucson is not always a hot, dry place. Rains occur in the summer and early fall and temperatures can get quite cool during winter evenings. It is definitely cold enough for a sweatshirt, sometimes even a heavy jacket. Check the weather forecast before your trip.
- Check out the natural side of the city. You needn’t trek into the mountains or the Sonoran Desert to appreciate the rugged beauty of Tucson’s environs. A tram runs from the outskirts of the city up Sabino Canyon. Meanwhile, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum (2021 N. Kinney Rd) features area wildlife in an enclosed environment. If you visit during the summer, the Desert Museum is a good place to go to beat the heat.
- Don’t stay away from the University of Arizona campus. Some of the best values are found on or near campus. If you are looking for cheap night out or some good bistro or bar-and-grill food, you will find the best deals at places catering to U of A students.
- If you are not visiting at the height of summer, bicycles are a good option for transportation. Tucson is very bicycle friendly and boasts plenty of trails. You are allowed to take your wheels on local buses as well.
- It almost goes without saying, but if you are outside for an extended period of time, wear sunscreen or cover your skin with long sleeves. You can also stave off sunburn with a wide-brimmed hat.
- Don’t think you know Southwestern food because a few items are on the menu at your local bar-and-grill. Tucson is home to some of the most authentic Southwestern restaurants in the region. Mexican-tinged eateries like El Charro Café, (311 N. Court Ave) are what this style of cuisine is all about.
- Tucson is one of the best places to experience the arts scene of the Southwest. Unlike Santa Fe, where art is the main attraction, Tucson offers art as just one of its many attractions.
