Tulsa is the second largest city in Oklahoma. Like its larger cousin, Oklahoma City, it has experienced a bit of a boom over the past couple of decades. Tulsa has a definite Middle American/down-home vibe, but its cosmopolitan edge comes through as well. A diverse array of attractions makes this city one of the best bests for tourists headed to the Plains States. Tulsa boasts modern museums, historic sites (from its cowboy and oil-boom days), and a cosmopolitan mix of restaurants and cultural attractions.
Here are the best tourist attractions in and around Tulsa.
Budget
Tulsa Zoo (6421 East 36th St North) is rather humble by big city standards, but the collection of animals includes polar bears, giraffes and elephants. With an admission fee of only six dollars ($4 for kids), it is a great value.
There is public art scattered all around the city. The most impressive example of this is the Artificial Cloud, a 72 foot sculpture near the First Avenue pedestrian bridge. The work was done by famous artist Robert Haozous. Other public works of art include the Parade of Penguins, a collection of dozens of uniquely decorated penguin sculptures by local artists scattered around the city.
Value
Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame (111 East 1st St) is a non-profit museum located in the historic Union Depot. The art deco style of the building itself is as much of an attraction as the displays inside. The museum recognizes the contributions of past jazz masters to the Oklahoma jazz scene.
The highlight of the Tulsa Air and Space Museum (3624 N. 74th Ave) is the impressive collection of civilian and military aircraft housed there. The "Space" part of the museum comes from a planetarium that is located next to the airplane hanger where the planes are kept. A combined ticket costs $10.
Splurge
Tulsa's Incredible Pizza Company (8314 E. 71st Street) is Chuckie Cheese on a much grander scale. With an all-you-can-eat pizza buffet and amusement park atmosphere (go-carts, mini-golf, bowling, massive arcade), it is no wonder the place is packed on the weekend.
Las Vegas has nothing on Tulsa. The Creek Nation Casino Tulsa (1616 East 81st Street) is a popular gambling den with a full selection of table games, electronic games, and a poker room. The convention center there hosts rock, pop and R&B acts on a regular basis. It is best to purchase tickets for these shows in advance to assure yourself a seat.
