There are nearly one million people in the Tulsa metropolitan area.  A high concentration of universities and wealth from oil drilling has caused Tulsa to grow from small cowboy town into cosmopolitan metropolis.  The city is off the tourist map, but defies expectations with its hilly green terrain and numerous cultural attractions.  Here are some tips to help would-be Tulsa tourists plan their itineraries. 

1. Tulsa has one of the highest concentrations of art deco buildings in the country.  Though it might be lacking in some areas (when compared to a big city tourist destination), it is a haven for architecture lovers, history buffs and anyone who appreciates the urban atmosphere that goes along with classic styles of architecture. 

2. Tulsa has pleasant summers and cool winters.  Severe weather can become an issue in the summer, but warning sirens allow plenty of time for visitors to get to safety.  Locals are experienced at dealing with tornados and thunderstorms and can tell you where to go if need be.  Winters in Oklahoma are cool and windy, but the temperatures do not drop far below freezing. 

3. It is necessary to have a car to traverse Tulsa.  Buses run infrequently, even in major areas.  However, there are plenty of bicycle trails, making Tulsa an extremely bike-friendly city.  Its grid-like layout and medium-size make traveling by pedal-power easy, even for someone who is riding through unfamiliar streets. 

4. Tulsa's terrain features gently rolling hills and green landscapes.  It is anything but the dry-and-dusty image most people have of Oklahoma.

5. Nightlife is somewhat lacking in Tulsa.  There are pubs and bars, especially around the many college campuses in town.  However, there are few lounges and nightclubs, even though one might expect these types of nightspots because of the mildly cosmopolitan vibe of the city.

6. Tulsa is home to several large colleges.  As with other cities, there is generally a vibrant nightlife scene and plenty of cheap eats around the college campuses.  Both the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State have campuses in Tulsa, as does the University of Tulsa and Oral Roberts University. 

7. Tulsa has several respectable art museums.  There is also a large concentration of public art in the city, including the numerous "parade of penguins" sculptures scattered throughout the city and the gigantic Artificial Cloud located just outside downtown.  These displays, coupled with the unique architecture of the Tulsa, are just as interesting as what you'd find in any gallery.
