Washington, D.C. Attractions - Search for Cheap Airline Tickets to Washington, D.C.
Washington is filled with tourist attractions. Some, like the Lincoln Memorial or Smithsonian Museum, are obvious for anyone coming to DC for some sightseeing. Other attractions, like the many universities, parks and the architecture of the city are not as well-known but equally attractive for those who take the time out from the more famous sites.
Here is a collection of Washington DC’s major attractions and a few that are lesser-known but equally worth while.
Budget
There are great examples of religious architecture such as the National Cathedral and the National Shrine. Embassy Row is also interesting for its atmosphere and architecture. Located on Massachusetts Ave, it features nearly 50 buildings of differing styles representing some of the most important nations in the world.
Arlington, Virginia is within striking distance of Washington DC. The Arlington National Cemetery is here as is the Pentagon. You can pre-arrange a tour of the Pentagon, but it is not a place that you want to wander around unescorted, unless you want to end up being interrogated by security.
Value
Nature lovers will find the National Zoo and the National Arboretum quite interesting. Both offer high quality exhibits and are recognized internationally for their collections of wildlife and plant life, respectively.
Washington has a high concentration of universities and other academic institutions. The most famous of these are Howard University, Georgetown University and Johns Hopkins. It would be incorrect to say that these schools had an “Ivy League vibe” but their rich histories and campuses make them worth a visit.
Splurge
The National Mall is THE attraction in Washington DC. Luckily, for those who want to explore other parts of the vast city, the concentration of famous monuments and buildings means tourists can see everything that they want in a day or a day-and-a-half. Some of the more popular sites in this area include the White House, the Capital Building, the Washington Monument, the Smithsonian Museum, and a host of lesser known venues like the National Portrait Gallery and the Air and Space Museum. It would be a shame to travel to Washington and not at least stroll through the Mall.
Washington has a vibrant live music scene. All genres are represented, with blues and jazz music especially prevalent. Indie rock bands and underground hip hop acts also find their way to the stage frequently. Electronic artists like Thievery Corporation, DC natives, frequently play impromptu shows around town.
