The National Mall and surrounding collection of museums are the most notable tourist attractions in DC; although they only scratch the surface of what all the city has to offer. There are many neighborhoods and lesser known tourist sites that are also worth a look. But the sprawling nature of the city makes it difficult to find those venues that are not located in or near the main drag of the Mall and Smithsonian Museum.
Here are some tips to make your trip to the nation’s capitol an exciting one.
- When there is a major event in the city, it can be difficult, if not impossible to get around. It is best to avoid DC during presidential inaugurations, major conferences or large organized protests. It is also crowded during the 4th of July, though the spectacular festivities, concerts and fireworks make this an exciting time to visit. Just be aware that it might be abnormally crowded at hotels, museums, and on public transit.
- Do not drive or rent a car to travel around Washington DC. The Metro System consists of five lines. These reach almost all areas of the city that would be of interest to tourists. Buses and taxis can help you get to the rest of the attractions. Traffic and a lack of convenient parking spaces makes it tough, if not impossible, to use a car to get around the city.
- A well-planned trip to the National Mall will allow you to see everything in one day. The memorials and museums are all within striking distance of one another. Choosing what you want to see and getting to everything in one day means more time to explore other parts of the city close up. Go on a weekday if possible.
- Don’t forget that Washington is a working city, filled with government officials and diplomats. Many tourists might find it interesting to visit Embassy Row (along Massachusetts Avenue) or to see the offices of government officials surrounding the Mall.
- Choose a lesser known festival to visit. Spring means Washington’s cherry blossoms are in bloom (the festival happens from late March to early April). The National Kite Festival is also a worthwhile time to visit. It is held each spring and can add an extra element of excitement to your trip, especially if you have children.
- Washington is a university town. Don’t overlook the sights at Georgetown, Johns Hopkins and Howard University.
