Overview

For a taste of true Southern living and hospitality, there's no better place to visit than Atlanta. As your flight lands, you'll be joining more than 23 million leisure travelers who visit this historic city each year.

There are many reasons why Atlanta is so popular. For starts, it's an inexpensive city to visit. In metro Atlanta, the average nightly hotel room rate is under $90.00, plus you can always find cheap airfares on airlines like Delta Airlines and AirTran, which have major hubs here.

From historical sites to cutting-edge and highly-entertaining tourist attractions, Atlanta offers all kinds of activities for people of all ages. From its more than 500 restaurants and 950 shopping centers, to its 71 public golf courses, 348 public parks, and 30 major cultural, educational and sports attractions and venues, Atlanta is a fun city to visit year-around.

When to Go
High Season
As America's fourth largest and busiest city, there really isn't a peak or off-peak time to visit, as activities, events and tourist attractions are available year-round. During the spring and summer months, outdoor festivals and attractions, like the Atlanta Botanical Garden (www.atlantabotanicalgarden.org) and Zoo Atlanta (www.zooatlanta.org), are popular. You can, however, play golf during the spring, summer and fall, or comfortably walk around parts of the city as you explore throughout most of the year.

Atlanta is chock full of indoor attractions. Football fans will appreciate the indoor dome where the Atlanta Falcons (NFL) play their home games, and the indoor Philips Arena, which is home to the Atlanta Hawks (NBA), Atlanta Thrashers (NHL) and Atlanta Dream (WNBA). Obviously, the cultural venues where The Atlanta Opera, Atlanta Ballet and Atlanta Symphony Orchestra perform are also indoors, as are the museums and galleries.

Low Season
December, January and February are the coldest months of the year in Atlanta. While you might not want to experience too many outdoor activities, you'll find an abundance of indoor attractions well worth experiencing, like the Georgia Aquarium (www.georgiaaquarium.org), World of Coca-Cola (www.worldofcoca-cola.com), Inside CNN Atlanta (www.cnn.com/tour/atlanta/), and the Ferbank Museum of Natural History (www.fernbankmuseum.org).

Best Time to Go
If you're looking to spend lots of time outdoors, the spring, summer and fall months are definitely the best seasons to visit. Most tourists prefer the spring, as the fall travel season is crowded with students flowing in to attend one of the more than 30 colleges and universities in Atlanta, including John Marshall Law School and Emory University.

Getting Around
With its 48 miles of rail track that crisscross Atlanta and 130 bus routes, using Metro Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) to get anywhere within Metro Atlanta or any of the city's outlining communities is the most convenient. Although MARTA fares just increased in October 2009, it continues to be the most economical way to get around.

As with any city, driving around Metro Atlanta is certainly possible, but most tourists prefer to avoid dealing with traffic and parking. If you'll be visiting the outskirts of Atlanta and spending time within any of the distinct neighborhoods, you'll definitely want and need access to a car or hire a taxi, as the MARTA will easily get you to, from and around Metro Atlanta, but won't really help you conveniently get around specific neighborhoods. You can access MARTA route maps, schedules and travel information at www.itsmarta.com.
