Independence, Missouri is the county seat of Jackson County. The city is best known as an important location for the Latter Day Saint movement, as the official starting point for the Oregon Trail and as the home of President Harry S. Truman. Today the city still holds a strong historical significance for the United States.
When in Independence be sure to visit the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library & Museum. This site and Truman's home are two of the biggest attractions in the region. There are a number of restored mansions around the city that offer a fine representation of architecture from the 1800's. The 1859 Jail, Marshal's Home and Museum once held Frank James (brother of Jesse James) and are a fun and interesting tour.
The climate in the region is marked by four distinct seasons. The summers get warm with high temperatures reaching above 80F. Winters are very cold with low temperatures falling well into the teens. Summer months are the wettest of the year with an average of around 5 inches of rainfall each month.
