When to Go
High Season
Houston enjoys lovely weather year-round for the most part. During the summer months, you’ll enjoy outdoor concerts and events. During the winter, these same venues host holiday-themed events.

Low Season
Temperatures are comfortably moderate during wintertime in Houston. Snow and ice are highly unusual occurances, but the city is known to receive rainfall and harsher "freezing rain" on occasion.

George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) is the eighth busiest airport in America, with service from 18 major airlines that fly to and from over 110 U.S. cities and 65 countries.

Between George Bush Houston Intercontinental Airport and downtown, the taxi fare is about $43.00 to $45.00, plus tip; between William P. Hobby Airport and downtown, it’s $21.00 to $23.00, plus tip (including the airport surcharge of between $1.25 and $2.75, which is automatically added to the fare).

Weather
During winter, temperatures seldom drop below 60 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and hover between 40 and 50 degrees at night. Spring and summer months experience gorgeous weather, ranging from 70s to low 90s during the day, and mid-50s to 70s at night. July and August are the warmest months, with temperatures climbing to the low- to mid-90s.

Performing Arts
Along with the Houston Ballet and the Houston Grand Opera, the city is famous for the Houston Symphony, one of the oldest performing arts organizations in Texas. These venues and other theatres are found in Houston’s Theater District.

Museums in Houston
Eighteen vastly different museums are centralized in The Museum District. Kids will love the expanded Children’s Museum of Houston, one of the nation’s best kid-oriented museums. Adults can check out the Museum of Fine Arts, the Contemporary Art Museum Houston, the Holocaust Museum Houston and the Houston Museum of Natural Science.

Houston Zoo
One of Parents magazine Top 10 Zoos in the U.S. in 2009, the Houston Zoo offers 55 acres of lush tropical landscapes with over 4,500 exotic animals representing over 800 species. The John P. McGovern Children’s Zoo area is a must-see.

Sam Houston Race Park
Sam Houston Race Park is a popular venue for horse racing, concerts and dining. Come for thoroughbred racing between November and April and Quarter Horse Races between mid-April and mid-August.

Kemah Boardwalk
Recently renovated Kemah Boardwalk offers amusement park rides, like the Bullet rollercoaster and a two deck carousel, right on the waterfront. Purchase an all-day pass for the rides, shows and attractions; the Boardwalk is free. Enjoy live concerts during the summer, an incredible July 4th fireworks celebration and special holiday events.

Space Center Houston
Space Center Houston, including NASA’s Johnson Space Center, is an incredible experience directly from the people who make it happen. Spend the day with exciting exhibits, hands-on demonstrations, IMAX movies and narrated tours of working NASA facilities. The optional “Level Nine” tour offers an up-close, four-to-five hour look at NASA operations, including Mission Control.

Moody Gardens
Galveston’s Moody Gardens, holds amazing family-friendly attractions in three massive glass pyramid-shaped structures. On-site there is an IMAX theater, the Discovery Museum, an impressive aquarium, a walk-through rainforest and other interesting venues. Purchase admission tickets to specific attractions or a one-day unlimited pass. Moody Gardens is well worth the hour drive from Houston, especially if you’re traveling with kids.

Must See Sights
George Ranch Historical Park
Visit the George Ranch Historical Park in Richmond for a peek at Texas life in the 1800s. This working ranch focuses on growing cotton crops, oil, the Texas Revolution and the Civil War. Experience outdoor exhibits and historic homes.

Reliant Stadium
With a seating capacity of over 71,500, Reliant Stadium is host to many popular events, including the world’s largest rodeo, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, The Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus and Gold Cup Soccer. The stadium is situated within Reliant Park featuring pedal boats, a petting zoo and a miniature train.

Hermann Park
One of Houston’s most beautiful outdoor areas is Hermann Park. Come for The Japanese Garden and free concerts between April and October at the Miller Outdoor Theatre.

Getting Around
Houston is a sprawling metropolis, so renting a car is the most convenient way to get around. Downtown, the METRORail or the METRO bus systems offer inexpensive and convenient transportation. Six taxi companies operate using a meter fare system. There’s a $1.00 surcharge for trips between 8:00pm and 6:00am.
