Overview

Washington’s “second city” to Seattle, Spokane is the small central hub for many communities that sprawl across eastern Washington. Most visitors to the area come on business or while passing through from western Washington to Idaho. The city center, which is home to about 200,000 people, takes up a relatively small geographic area. It’s a frontier town all grown up, with plenty of bars, restaurants and shops to choose from. Outside of town you’ll find the natural beauty Washington is known for: rolling hills, verdant forests and fertile farmlands.

When to Go
High Season
During summer, days are long, hot and sunny, allowing visitors to take advantage of the area’s outdoor activities, such as lakeside leisure and golfing. Early fall is the best times to visit the area. The temperature drops, but on many days it is still warm enough to enjoy outdoor activities like white-water rafting and hiking.

Low Season
During the winter months of December through March, Spokane sees the fewest tourists. Temperatures usually hover in the 20s and 30s and heavy snowfall is a common occurrence. It’s a good time for skiers to visit, but most other tourists stay away until spring.
