Overview
Over the years, Las Vegas has evolved from a kitschy inexpensive desert playground for gamblers to a world-class luxury vacation destination. Glamorous palatial resorts, award-winning celebrity chef restaurants, Broadway musicals and lavish spas have replaced the $5.99 buffets and cheesy lounge shows of yesteryear's Strip.

Plan to arrive at night so you get a bird's eye view of the millions of twinkling lights and huge flashy signs on the 4-mile long Strip. The 13-block stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard South houses megaresorts, themed casinos, restaurants, bars and shopping.

When to Go
High Season
Spring and fall are the most pleasant seasons to visit but attract crowds drawn to the city's sunny climate.   Visitor population peaks on New Year's Eve, Super Bowl Sunday, Valentine's Day and pro sporting events such as boxing matches and NCAA basketball championships.

Low Season
Climate dictates the decrease in visitors and hotel rates, with July and August temperatures averaging over 100 degrees and offering the best travel deals. Vegas is less crowded between Christmas and New Year's Eve and in the months of January and February, but most outdoor pools are closed from Labor Day to Memorial Day.

Best Time to Go
There's hardly a bad time to visit Sin City.   If you want to avoid the crowds and get a better deal on one of the 25,0000 hotel rooms on the Strip, book your trip during the week.   If you want to enjoy the wild nightclub scene and don't mind crowds in the bigger casinos and spending more cash to stay, opt for a three-day weekend.

Airport Information
McCarran International Airport (LAS)
Distance: 1 mile south of the Strip
Drive time: 10-15 minutes to your hotel and longer during peak traffic times

If you're staying on the Strip or downtown, getting to your hotel is a cinch.  Taxis, shuttles, limos and buses are all available from the airport.  Shuttles are inexpensive and Bell Trans (800/274-7433) runs 20 passenger SUV's daily from 7:45 am to midnight between the airport and all major hotels and resorts.  Shuttles depart outside the airport, west of the baggage claim area and costs are approximately $5.50 per person.  Even less expensive are CAT local buses, which depart from the airport and drop off riders at the Stratosphere on the Strip, where you can catch the #301 bus which makes stops close to most hotels.   Fares average $2 per adult.   You can also opt for a taxi which runs about $15, or if you want to splurge and spend $40 to $50 you can hire one of the many limos available outside of the airport.

Taking advantage of one of the many available cheap flights to Las Vegas is a great way to see what lies beyond the casino walls. Arriving at LAS from New York City or Chicago can run, before taxes and fees, from $275 to $325 and about $350 from Miami, but there are deals on cheap flights to Las Vegas to be had especially on Thursdays, Saturdays and Mondays for weekend getaways.

Things to Do
The Strip
This glittery stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard South is the heart of the city and the entertainment capital of the world.   Home to many of the largest hotels and casinos on the planet, the variety of sights is endless and includes theme casinos such as Luxor, Monte Carlo, Treasure Island, Paris and New York New York, as well as the megaresorts Bellagio, Venetian, Wynn, Caesars, Mandalay Bay, Encore and Palazzo.

Forum Shops at Caesars Palace
Walk down the Strip to the roman-themed Forum shops at Caesars Palace and spend the morning shopping under a baby blue sky through an array of designer retailers including Kate Spade, Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Dior.  With over 160 shops and luxury boutiques spanning 634,000 square feet, there's plenty to keep a shopaholic busy.   Weary walkers can rest their feet and watch the statues come to life at the Atlantis Fountain Show.

Conservatory, Gallery of Fine Art and Fountains at Bellagio
Next door to Caesars is the beautiful  Bellagio Hotel.  Past the lobby's vibrant glass flower petal chandelier lies the spectacular Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Gardens.  Arched glass ceilings tower 50 feet above the 13,000 square foot garden, which typically holds 31 trees, 500 shrubs and 6,000 flowers.  the garden is totally transformed four times a year, offering guests a guaranteed fresh floral experience on each visit.

Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art
After a peaceful stroll through the gardens, head to the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art.   The marble floored museum houses small rooms filled with paintings by Rubens, Rembrandt, Monet, Degas, Cezanne and Van Gogh and also feature traveling exhibits from other museums.  If you can't afford to buy one of the master paintings, stop by the Gallery Store next door for a keepsake.

Bellagio Water Fountains
If your visiting Bellagio at night, make sure to see the best free show in Vegas - the Bellagio Water Fountains.  Giant spouts send water shooting hundreds of feet in the air, dancing, swirling and swaying to music ranging from Sinatra to symphonic.   Shows are every half hour starting early afternoon, every 15 minutes from 7 pm to midnight.

Local Attractions
Fremont Street Glitter Gulch
After the Bellagio fountains, the Glitter Gulch Lights on Fremont Street are the next best free show.  The four-block stretch of Fremont Street is a pedestrian only zone that's covered with a video screen with 12.5 million lights and a 500,000 watt sound system.  Every night from 8 pm to midnight an hourly sound and light extravaganza entertains the crowds below.

Catch a Show
Jersey Boys, at the Palazzo, chronicles the careers of '60s idols Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.  The songbook musical with a dramatic biography attached includes performances of "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You," "Oh What A Night," and "Big Girls Don't Cry," among others.

Phantom of the Opera - The Las Vegas Spectacular is housed in a $40 million state of the art custom built theater.  The Paris Opera House and Phantom's lair is appropriately found at the Venetian, the only place in Las Vegas where gondolas carry real life lovers down narrow dark canals.   Although the familiar tortured love triangle and haunting melodies are shortened into a 90-minute format, the elaborate sets and stellar cast successfully bring the music of the night to Vegas.

If Broadway shows aren't your cup of tea, opt for tickets to one of the many Cirque du Soleil circus themed shows or live magic or concert performances.

Insider Tips
  • Many hotels offer free shuttle services to and from the airport so its best to check before you fly to see if one is available.
  • Vegas offers two discount ticket offices to purchase cheaper seats to the top shows.  Tickets2Nite (888/TIX2NITE) puts any unsold seats for that evening on sale.  It is located in the Showplace Mall next to the MGM Grand and is open from noon to 9 pm.
  • Tix 4 Tonight (877/849-4868) also offers day-of-show discounts from 11 am to 8 pm.  It has four locations, the most convenient being the downtown branch in the Four Queens Hotel and the Strip location in front of the Fashion Show Mall.  Discounts from both services range from 10% to as high as 50% on top shows.
  • Special LowFares TipLadies in groups of two or more usually can score free tickets to the best clubs during the weeknights.  Just walk through the casino, the Strip, or your hotel's pool and before long a promotions person will hand out free passes.
  • One of the best deals in Vegas is still the buffet, which can range across the board in offerings and entrance prices.  If you want to cut costs on food, visit a buffet for lunch and avoid paying for breakfast or dinner.  The best include the Village Seafood Buffet at the Flamingo, the Bellagio Buffet and the buffet at Wynn.
  • If the Strip stores are too pricey, opt to visit the Las Vegas Outlet Center (7400 Las Vegas Boulevard South), housing 150 stores offering discounts as high as 75 percent off.
  • For more overall information about the city, visit the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority at 3150 Paradise Road or online at www.visitlasvegas.com.

Getting Around
One of the best ways to see the Strip is by foot, as heavy traffic lines the street during weekends and rush hour (5 to 8 pm).  The 301 bus travels between downtown (at Casino Center Boulevard and Stewart Street) and a few miles beyond the southern end of the Strip.   The Deuce, a double decker 24-hour bus runs the length of the Strip, with a $5 all day pass allowing passengers to get on and off as many times as they like.   The Las Vegas monorail 4-mile route runs from the MGM Grand to the Sahara, with stops along the way for $5 one way.   Operating hours are Monday through Thursday from 7 am to 2 am and Friday to Sunday from 7 am to 3 am.
