As the capital of Hawaii, Honolulu is the urban hub on the southeastern shore of the island, and continues to be an attractive venue full of culture and activities for visitors and residents alike. Honolulu was first discovered by Polynesian migrants who settled into the city as we know it today, but was soon conquered by Kamehameha I who moved his royal court to what is now downtown Honolulu. Since then, the Hawaiian Kingdom was built around Honolulu and soon became the center of commercial activity for the islands. The city is fueled by the tourism and entertainment industries, and continues to be a popular venue for visitors exploring other islands in Hawaii.

Key attractions and sites to explore in Honolulu include The Arts District in downtown Chinatown, the Bishop Museum, Foster Botanical Garden, Aloha Stadium and the Hawaii Theatre. The city is also divided into several neighborhoods and districts including Waikiki -- the world famous tourist district; Palolo and Kaimuki; Kaka'ako -- an industrial district between Downtown and Waikiki that is also home to two large shopping areas; and Manoa and Makiki, residential neighborhoods that are near the University of Hawai'i.

The City and County of Honolulu is the organization that oversees many of the city's events, community gatherings and residential and business developments. The organization is comprised of city council members, government advisors and the Mayor, and they work together to ensure Honolulu continues to be a thriving community for residents and visitors alike.
