As the most heavily populated city in Nevada, Las Vegas has become famous for its gaming, entertainment and shopping districts that attract millions of guests and visitors each year. Las Vegas was first discovered by Spaniards in the early 1800s, but was soon overtaken by a large Mormon community who built churches and religious organizations throughout the area. When gambling was legalized in 1931, the city soon became a popular tourist stop for thousands of travelers heading West, and the rise of hotels of restaurants attracted millions of people looking for work. The rapid development of casino-hotels and other entertainment establishments soon fueled the city's industry as we know it today, and Vegas continues to be one of the leading gambling centers of the world.
In addition to exploring countless hotels, casinos and resorts dotting the famous Vegas Strip, visitors to Vegas can head to several tourist spots, attractions and sites found throughout the city. The Bellagio Fountains feature a light and sound show with the world-famous fountain display, and this can be fun event for visitors of all ages. The City of Las Vegas oversees many of the area's events, community activities and city government elections. This organization is also responsible for directing economic, residential and commercial developments that take place throughout the region, and regularly holds conferences and seminars to educate the general public about news and changes. City council members, government officials and the mayor convene regularly at several government offices that are scattered throughout this diverse city.
