Minneapolis is one of the most important cultural and economic centers in the Midwestern US.  Known as The City of Lakes, the urban area is dotted with natural waterways.  Lakes, mostly found on the south side of the city, are surrounded by walkways that can get quite crowded on summer afternoons and evenings.  It seems that every resident of Minneapolis is out for a bike ride, jog or evening stroll.  The atmosphere is social and festive.  



Minneapolis also boasts one of the country's strongest arts scenes.  Theaters such as the nationally-renowned Guthrie Theater put on modern interpretations of classic plays.  There are numerous smaller theaters and drama groups that stage more experimental and less known works of drama.  The Children's Theater Group regularly puts on plays aimed at a younger audience.  

The Mall of America, near the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport, is a major tourist attraction.  It is one of the most expansive shopping centers in the world and boasts an indoor amusement park and cinema in addition to thousands of shops.   There are other places to shop as well.  Nicollet Avenue, in Downtown Minneapolis, is a pedestrian-friendly shopping street.  During the winter, shoppers can travel the street via an indoor skyway system.

The city's Uptown neighborhood is famous for its many ethnic restaurants and a nightlife scene that is a laid-back alternative to Downtown's glitzy nightclubs.  The city's south and northeast districts are both home to numerous art galleries and independently owned shops and cafés.
