New York City

As the largest city in the United States, New York City is constantly ranked with the world’s top urban and metropolitan areas in the world, and home to dozens of world-renown landmarks. New York is comprised of five boroughs: Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, The Bronx and Staten Island, and is home to over 8 million residents.

New York City has its roots in the trading industry, and served as a commercial trading post in the late 1700s. It has grown since into a thriving commercial, financial and entertainment district, and is also home to the United Nations headquarters. The city is divided into five boroughs and dozens of unique neighborhoods and communities. It has served as the birthplace for several cultural movements and historical events including the Harlem Renaissance and the growth of Broadway theatre spectacles along its famous entertainment district.

Popular tourist attractions in New York City include the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, the Statue of Liberty, Grand Central Terminal and the American Museum of Natural History. The Staten Island Ferry is another popular activity and site for visitors, a free ferry that helps commuters and tourists travel from lower Manhattan to Staten Island. Other venues of interest include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Central Park and Times Square, the bustling venue that is home to Broadway shows, world-class restaurants and dozens of unique boutique shops and art galleries. The city is also home to several noteworthy colleges and private schools including Fordham University, the State University of New York, Rockefeller University and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Exclusive private schools include Brooklyn Heights, The Chapin School, Spence School and the Convent of the Sacred Heart.

The New York City Government manages many of the city’s key political, economic and commercial affairs, and is comprised of elected officials including the city council, the mayor and borough presidents. New York is also comprised of several mayoral and city agencies that are responsible for organizing community events, facilitating meetings and conferences, and ensuring that the city of New York continues to be a thriving city in which to work, live and play.
