>> Portland
Portland is known as the City of Roses because many of its public and private gardens feature the famous flower. The city is also widely recognized for its high quality of life and user-friendliness. Though it does have many of the trapping of a large metropolis, there are also plenty of unique characteristics that make Portland one of the most pleasant and interesting West Coast travel destinations.

Visionary city planning has given Portland some very user-friendly assets. There are ample stretches of green throughout the city. Streets are tree-lined and public spaces like Forest Park and Washington Park are among the largest urban parks in the country. A lively bicycle culture (the most bike commuters per capita in the US) and a convenient public transportation system mean that it is easy and cheap to get around the city without a car.
And then there is Portland's quirky side. Weird/hip shops like Voodoo Doughnuts and Hot Lips Pizza are as much about personality and fun as they are about food. Couples can be legally wed at Voodoo, as well as getting a cup of coffee and a gourmet doughnut. There are also plenty of high-end eateries like Portland City Grill and Pazzo Ristorante, as well as a high concentration of organic and vegetarian-friendly venues. Street food is widely available, with popular lunch vendors in downtown, especially near Pioneer Square.
Portland is also a cultural center. There are classical Japanese gardens, weekly craft markets, live music performances by local, regional, and national indie acts, and art galleries galore. There are two monthly arts festivals, First Thursdays in the Pearl District and Last Thursdays on Alberta Street. These are great examples of Portland's culturally rich atmosphere.
