Hostelling International runs two hostels in Portland, Oregon. The most popular one is the Hawthorne Hostel, located in a converted 1909 house on youthful, bohemian Hawthorne Boulevard. The hostel fits well with the surrounding vibe. The rooms are pleasant, the décor purposely mismatched and the atmosphere laid back.
Most of the rooms are of the shared/dorm variety. The hotel provides free linens, free wireless internet and other useful extras like washing machines, lockers and discounted bicycle rentals. Free bagels and bakery items are available each morning. The Hawthorne is also well known for its $1 pancake breakfasts.
Hawthorne Blvd. is an attraction in and of itself. Independently-owned eateries are found up and down the street, as are independently-owned coffee shops, boutiques, and pubs. The well-known and popular Bagdad Brew Pub and Theater, a unique movie theater that serves beers and replaces movie theater seating with plush lazy-boy style chairs, is nearby.
For travelers who want to move further away, the hostel helps to arrange tours to some of the biggest tourist attractions in the area, such as treks to Mount St. Helens or Whale Watching along the coast. Downtown Portland and the Pearl District hold a different set of attractions. They are filled with shopping opportunities, cutting edge restaurants, and plenty of art galleries.
Information about Hawthorne Boulevard, including a listing of shops and events, can be found on the Hawthorne Boulevard Business Association web site. General tourist information for the greater Portland area can be found on the city's tourism web site.
