The Kennedy School is one of the most unique budget hotels in Portland. Depending on your definition, it might be a stretch to even call it a hotel. Housed inside a historic school building that was originally built in 1915, the hotel is owned by McMenamins, a Portland-based group that runs everything from movie theaters to breweries. There are 35 rooms in the Kennedy School Hotel. Each one is large: the size of an elementary school classroom. Some of the remnants of the building's scholastic days still remain in the rooms (chalkboards, coatrooms, that unmistakable classroom atmosphere). Nonetheless, hotel reviews of this budget hotel usually mention comfort ahead of quirkiness.
The biggest attraction of the Kennedy School: it is combined with other McMenamins businesses. There are features like a brewery, movie theater, and pubs and restaurants (yes, plural) on the premises as well. These venues host live music, theme nights and even a film festival. The combination of class, convenience and quirkiness makes the Kennedy School a truly amazing hotel deal.
There are also some interesting attractions outside of the school grounds. The Alberta Arts District has plenty of independent boutiques, art galleries and a monthly street fair (on the final Thursday of every month). Even if you are not there during festival time, the plethora of coffee shops and pedestrian traffic mean that there will still be a vibrant street scene.
The Alberta Arts District has a web site that lists attractions and events (http://www.artonalberta.org/). The City of Portland web site includes links to information that is especially useful for tourists visiting the city (http://www.portlandonline.com/index.cfm?c=25782).
