Though it is the smaller of the so-called Twin Cities, Saint Paul is the capitol of Minnesota. It is located across the Mississippi River from the more cosmopolitan Minneapolis. Though Minneapolis has more cultural attractions, Saint Paul holds its own in terms of tourist attractions and excitement. Some of these attractions are tucked away in residential areas, but that only adds to the unique vibe of the city.

Downtown Saint Paul has a strong sense of history. Buildings like Galtier Plaza and the Landmark Center boast architecture from the beginning of the previous century. However, the Saint Paul Farmers Market and Xcel Energy Center, home of the NHL's Minnesota Wild, bring a modern edge to the district. Like Minneapolis, many of the buildings in Downtown Saint Paul are connected by enclosed second-floor pedestrian bridges known as skyways. This allows shoppers to avoid the harsh weather during wintertime.
The State Capitol building is open to the public and tours are given regularly. University Avenue, the main road between Minneapolis and Saint Paul, boasts numerous ethnic restaurants including Vietnamese, Thai, Caribbean, and Indian.
Grand Avenue is a shopping and dining street with boutiques, art galleries, bars and restaurants. The neighborhood is characterized by historic brick buildings and a laid-back atmosphere.
Though Saint Paul does not have the urban lakes that Minneapolis does, it is in the vicinity of natural areas. Fort Snelling State Park is an expansive natural area along the Mississippi River just outside of Saint Paul. There are trails along the river that are popular with bikers and hikers.
