San Diego has many identities. Though it does not carry the same gravitas as Los Angeles in the world's imagination, many people prefer San Diego to its northern neighbor. It is safer, less congested, less polluted, and less artificial. But that is not to say it is less sophisticated.

San Diego's culinary scene is the equal of any city in the country. It has a vibrant arts and drama scene, plenty of live music and exotic cultural influences. Also, parts of San Diego are quite historic. Remnants of early Spanish colonial times can still be found. Mission San Diego de Alcala, the oldest Spanish mission in California, still stands in the Mission Valley District of San Diego. Other parts of Mission Valley also hearken back to San Diego's early days, when it was the first major town in Spanish California. The historic Gaslamp Quarter has been reinvented as a retail and nightlife neighborhood. Meanwhile, places like Hotel del Coronado and La Valencia Hotel are reminders of the glorious early 1900s, when San Diego first came onto the tourist map.
Of course, most people know San Diego for the San Diego Zoo and SeaWorld. Yes, these are impressive parks and draw tens of thousands of people each day, but there is plenty more. San Diego Zoo shares Balboa Park with the Old Globe Theater, Museum of Man and more than a dozen other exhibit spaces including gardens, museums and performance halls.
San Diego is also a beach town. Beaches are found up and down the city's waterfront. Some are quite popular and crowded, but there are always less crowded options nearby. The weather fluctuates little, so any time of year is beach time.
