Hostelling International (HI, for short) is a well respected hostel company that specializes in budget hotels catering to young travelers.  Unlike most hostels, however, HI's Downtown San Diego location has a diverse menu of accommodations.  There are shared dorm rooms with four to ten beds, single rooms, and even family rooms.  Hotel reviews overlook the Spartan in-room set up, instead pointing to the social atmosphere, free wi-fi, free breakfasts, and a glut of extra offerings.  

HI San Diego offers free transportation to Tijuana (just across the border with San Diego), walking tours of San Diego and inexpensive cultural experiences, including world cuisine dinners and trips to local performance spaces.  

What truly makes the HI San Diego Downtown a great hotel deal is its location.  It is located in the heart of San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter, the city's premier shopping, entertainment and culture center.  The Gaslamp is a historic neighborhood, filled with old architecture and energy.  It would be impossible to find a cheaper budget hotel to stay in this part of San Diego.  Prices for a bed in a dorm room at HI start at $19.  As far as price, that is the city's best hotel deal.    

In addition to the bars, restaurants and art galleries of the Gaslamp, there are the many beaches of the city.  Pacific Beach and Ocean Beach are both nearby.  HI organizes trips to cultural events, museums and sporting events, but it is also easy to get to these attractions on your own because San Diego's trains, trolleys and buses converge on the Gaslamp Quarter.
