Santa Fe is sometimes known as "The City Different." The name is apt because the city's history and culture are unlike that of any other city in the U.S.  Native American, Spanish, Mexican and American cultures blend to create an exciting and unique atmosphere that has made Santa Fe one of the Southwest's premier tourist destinations.  



According to some historians, this is the oldest urban area in the United States.  Aged colonial buildings like the Saint Francis Cathedral and San Miguel Mission show this aspect of the city while museums like the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian focus on the history and culture of the Native American tribes that have called this area home for more than 1000 years.  

Santa Fe has a lively arts scene.  There are plenty of galleries and exhibit spaces focusing on Southwestern folk art.  The city is one of the best places to buy this type of art in the entire U.S.  There is also a respectable contemporary arts scene.  A private organization called SITE Santa Fe hosts exhibits and helps promote contemporary artists from Santa Fe.

Santa Fe also has a natural side.  The scenic Sangre de Cristo Mountains sit just outside the city.  They are a venue for all sorts of outdoor activities, from skiing to mountain biking to horseback riding to trekking.  

Santa Fe holds plenty of charm.  It also has enough attractions to keep culturally-savvy and historically-minded visitors busy for days.  That is quite a feat, considering this city is quite small for a major tourist destination.  It boasts a population of only 70,000.
