Seattle is the cultural and economic center of the Pacific Northwest. It is probably most known for its rainy weather, its live music scene, and its coffee shop culture. Seattle also has a decidedly international flavor, with a large Asian population that has influenced the city's society for more than 100 years.

Downtown Seattle is filled with easily recognizable landmarks. The most famous is the Seattle Space Needle, which rises above the cityscape. Visitors can take a trip to the top of this towering structure for unbelievable views of the surround areas.
Pike Place Market is another well-known Seattle institution. It is best known for the seafood shop where staff transfers fish from storage by throwing them through the air. However, this is just one example of the quirky, low-key atmosphere at Pike and all around the Seattle Waterfront.
Seattle is famous for its coffee culture. Luckily, for bean aficionados, the city is crowded with independently-owned shops, it is not monopolized by Starbucks and Seattle's Best (two super-successful brands that got their start in Seattle). Seattle's eating scene is characterized by fresh seafood (arguably the best sushi in the country), diverse Asian and Asian-fusion restaurants, and a handful of high quality vegetarian eateries.
Seattle is an outdoor city. There are plenty of parks within city limits and some extensive natural areas (such as Olympic National Park) outside the city. Seattle's neighborhoods are diverse and eclectic. Visitors who truly want to grasp the city's personality would do well to wander the different neighborhoods and take in the local café, music, and shopping scenes. There are plenty of hidden gems in this rainy metropolis.
