Much loved pastrami deli reopens in New York
Pastrami lovers everywhere were utterly sad to see the highly regarded 2nd Ave Deli shut down almost two years ago. Though at a different location; still in the NYC and the steamed beef never tasted so good.
The deli was founded by the late Abe Lebewohl in 1954, and it was regretfully shut down due to an unstable lease, sky high rent and even higher renovation costs at its original location in Manhattan’s uber trendy East Village. On December 17th, the deli opened its doors to hungry customers at its new location on 33rd near Third Avenue.
"Second Ave Deli is not just a deli," said Jack Lebewohl, brother of Abe, the founder of the deli. "...It was a home away from home."
On March 4, 1996, Abe Lebewohl was shot and killed while making a bank deposit. The killing remains unsolved, shocked the city and left the family pained.
Jack Lebewohl's sons Joshua, 27, and Jeremy, 25, restored the deli and after a year of construction revived it completely.
