Mammoth reaches premier status
Mammoth Mountain is one of North America’s most-visited and largest ski and snowboard destinations. It finally became a true destination resort last month when the Westin Monache opened at the base of the mountain in Mammoth Lakes. As a result, west coasters no longer have to travel out to such luxury ski resorts as Whistler-Blackcomb, British Columbia; Jackson Hole, Wyoming; Sun Valley, Idaho; or even Vail, Colorado. True Californians are just a hop, skip and a jump away from Mammoth’s luxury mountain.
No doubt about it, Mammoth is pretty well endowed in terms of natural landscape and weather. Sitting on the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains (just northeast of Los Angeles and south of Reno), the mountain averages 32 feet of snowfall each year. 3,500 acres of terrain, a vertical drop of 3,100 feet, and California sunshine encompass all that is Mammoth. Such a mountain consistently ranks among the top 10 ski resorts when reviewed by leading snow sports magazines and web sites.
In the past couple years, development has been centered on the lower mountain, where trails wander, weave in and out into the borders of the town Mammoth Lakes. The major development, the Village at Mammoth, provided additional luxurious condominiums, new dining and convenient shopping and rental venues. What’s more, developers built a 15-person gondola that provided visitors staying in the condos, hotels and motels of Mammoth Lakes easy access to the mountain.
The Westin Monache Resort, just opened its doors November 2007 and has been stunning patrons ever since. People have never seen the level of service the resort has to offer in the Mammoth Lakes region. Enjoy 24-hour room service, a ski valet, an on-site rental shop, pool, hot tubs, fitness facilities, and drum roll please—underground parking.
