Michelangelo’s David is on the move
Michelangelo’s valiant David could be moving after 135 years in the museum that was essentially designed to showcase the masterpiece.
The increase of mass tourism to Florence’s city center has forced officials to consider alternative solutions, which includes a proposal to move the 14 foot statue from the Galleria dell’Accademia to the edge of the city where a new theater is planned to be built. The city that houses David is one of the city’s main draws, thus long lines full of tourists fall out onto the streets outside. To help ease the congestion, Tuscany’s top official, Paolo Cocchi, proposed moving David to a theater built near the city’s Leopolda Station.
About 1.3 million people visit the Accademia every year. The theater where David is moved is not scheduled to be completed until 2010-2011.
