Am I meant to cruise
Am I meant to cruise
Many people question if cruises are right for them. Sure, the hesitation is understandable after all, once the ship leaves the dock, you’re stuck until the ship turns around and goes home. Here are some answers to your frequently ask questions and concerns.
What your first cruise should be
Several first-time cruises feel safer with a short cruise with lots of port days. Doing this ensures that you won’t go mad if you’re stuck aboard ship. Good approach if you want to test the waters and get your feet wet, but I’d suggest you book a longer itinerary with some days aboard the ship—or “sea days.” This way you’re able to relax and really experience what it’s like to be on ship and enjoy the ship’s facilities. You’ll really find out what “cruising” is this route. In short, look for a cruise with a balance of sea days and port days.
Attire at night
Cruise ships have become more informal over the years so fancy attire is completely optional. As a matter of fact, newer ships are offering more informal dining settings, such as buffets, pizzerias, and sushi bars. Several ships still continue to throw two formal dinner nights in the main dining rooms however, the Captain’s Welcome and Farewell Dinner.
Seasickness
If you’ve ever experienced harsh motion sickness on land or airplanes, cruising might not be fore you. Ordinary motion sickness can be remedied by acupressure bands or Dramamine—don’t worry if you forget to pack them, the ship’s store has them readily available. Book a cabin on a lower deck in the middle of the ship where motion is minimal if you’re prone to motion sickness. The balcony cabin in the middle of the ship is just as good, if not better, as fresh air always helps with motion sickness. You can also get a motion sickness shot in the ship’s medical center, but expect to pay at least $75.
Tipping
A few luxury cruise ships have “no tipping required” policies. The other cruise ships, however, note that passengers are expected to tip their cabin steward, dining room waiter and assistant waiter.
