Avoiding Sickness on Your Travels

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

There has been another case of Tuberculosis documented for a traveler that recently flew.  All of the passengers that sat near the sick passenger are being contacted.  It seems that the more things improve - health care, immunizations and such - then the more things stay the same.  The threats are still out there.  But there are ways that you can stay safe and healthy during your next trip.

Get a completely physical before you travel.  Talk to your doctor about where you are going and any concerns that he (or she) might have for the trip.

Research the destination.  Check with the government to see if any warnings have been issued.  Read the news about any health related incidents that may have occurred in the last few months.  Remember that knowledge is power - the more that you know then the easier it will be to protect yourself or your family.

Be aware of the people around you or that you come in contact with during your trip.  If someone is sick (coughing, sneezing or looking out of sorts) then you may want to see your doctor again when you arrive home.  Keep notes of when you had contact with others that could potential be sick.

Relax!  The good news is that even TB is treatable these days.  Medical science has seen vast improvements and there are few conditions that you might encounter under normal situations that can not be treated.

No matter where you might travel, there is always a risk that you could encounter someone who is not well.  The best defense is a good offense.  Eat well, get exercise, some sunshine and fresh air, vitamin C and stay healthy before you travel.  This will help you fend off any problems that you might find while you travel.
