Creative Consumers Saving Money by Staycationing

1. Write to your local tourism board and get a packet of information. Many people are surprised to discover the number of events and attractions that can be found right in their own backyard.
2. Turn off the phone. You wouldn't be easy to contact if you were on a real vacation, so choose to be out of contact for your "staycation" as well. You can let the machine answer your home phone and anyone that has an emergency can contact you that way or through your cell phone if necessary.
3. Swear off work. Staying at home can make it tempting to "just check emails" or other simple work tasks. But nine times out of ten that simple task will turn into more than just checking - responding, calling, or even actual work. Determine to walk away from work completely for the entire time you are on your "staycation."
4. Make plans for fun. Set up trips, adventures and activities just like you would if you were on a true vacation. Plan for day trips away from the house or activities at the house. If you have things planned then you are probably more likely to follow through.
5. Put the word out. Make sure that your friends and family all understand that you are "on vacation" and that you shouldn't be disturbed unless there is an emergency. Expect some to ignore the request, but you might be pleased with how many do listen to your needs.
Tough times are no reason to skip the family vacation. Choose a "staycation" and you can have a great time that fits into your budget.
