Spring Blossoms in Small Town U.S.A.

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Spring is a great time to enjoy the small towns around the United States and the many different festivals that help to make them so unique.  Spring is also the time to enjoy the blooms and blossoms of the new season.  A tulip festival is the perfect place to combine the two.

The Orange City Tulip Festival showcases a rich Dutch heritage that includes costumes, parades, marching bands and thousands of tulips.  The festival is held each year in Orange City, Iowa and this year it falls on May 14, 15, & 16.  It could make for a fun and exciting mother's day getaway for the whole family.

What to Expect at the Orange City Tulip Festival:

A combination of free events and activities that combine the Dutch heritage and the blooms of spring.  Tickets can be ordered through the festival website

Family Day (Saturday, May 17th) that will feature hands on activities, Dutch games, clowns, puppet shows and performances directed towards the children.  There is something for every member of the family at the Orange City Tulip Festival.

The Old Factory's Wooden Shoe Maker will teach the old-world skill of making wood into shoes (and the shoes will be available for purchase).

Tulips in bloom along the streets in pots and just about everywhere you can imagine.  The spring blubs come in all different shapes and colors and add a unique touch to the landscape.

About a dozen reproductions of Dutch windmills add to the atmosphere of the festival.

Accommodations in the community are very reasonable with rooms starting under $70 per night.  Camping spaces are also available and will only cost around $10 per night.

Visiting small town America and enjoying the local festivals is a great way to save money on family vacations and to reconnect with the history and heritage of the United States.
