Dangers and Benefits of Home Swap Vacations
Friday, May 1st, 2009
The economy is forcing many people to think outside the box when it comes to vacations. Staying close to home is one option that is getting some increased interest but the use of a home swap situation is another great way to reduce the costs of a vacation getaway. With the interest in home swaps on the rise, the number of websites has increased. Digsville.com and homeexchange.com both offer listings around the world for a low membership fee.
Benefits of Using a Home Swap
- More interaction with the locals. You will not be put up in a hotel or resort with the rest of the tourists.
- Save on accommodations. Most hotel rooms will run around $100 to $150 per night so these savings could be substantial depending on how long you stay.
Dangers of the Home Swap
- Cancellation options. There is no real protection against one swapper having to cancel the trip. Some companies have recognized a need and are developing coverage that could pay for nonrefundable costs (travel tickets or car rentals). But there is no way to cover the disappointment if the travel plans fall through because of the other party.
- Truth in advertising may not exist. Even the home swap sites to not screen members. You will need to do the research about the other party (just like on eBay or other sites) to be sure that what you read is what you get.
- Damaged or stolen property after the other party leaves. The home swappers will be guests in your home and just like any other guests they may not be as nice to your stuff as you would prefer.
Successful Home Swap
- Do your research. Ask questions and even ask for referrals if you choose.
- Have friends or family members host the guests and offer to take them to see the sites or be available (that way you have some eyes in on the situation).
- Check your insurance to be sure it covers guests in your home.
- Have a back up plan just in case the home swap falls through.
