Memorial Day weekend signifies a long break from work for most people around the United States.  Many take the opportunity to celebrate and honor the men and women who have fought and died protecting the United States and all the people in it. Here are some events happening in a city near you.

Memorial Day Events

The National Memorial Day Parade is held annually in Washington, D.C.  The event was introduced by the American Veterans Center in 2005 and has grown to one of the largest Memorial Day traditions through out the United States.  The parade includes marching bands, military units, youth groups, parade floats and hundreds of veterans from all of the wars that have touched the peace of the United States.  The National Memorial Day Parade will begin at 2 pm on May 25, 2009 and will run along Constitution Avenue in Washington, D.C.

Felton, California hosts "Felton Remembers" with a Memorial Day weekend parade and a Covered Bridge Festival.  The event also features live music, food and drink vendors, craft booths and other activities.  Felton Remembers happens each year on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend.

Green Bay will be hosting "A Soldier's Remembrance" from 10 am to 4:30 pm on Monday, May 25th in Heritage Hill State Historical Park at 2640 S. Webster Avenue.  Visitors can see the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, listen to the stories of veterans and enjoy the customs of 1836 Fort Howard.  There will also be live music and dramatic presentations.  Visitors are also encouraged to bring care packages for those currently serving.  More information can be found at www.heritagehillgb.org.

Beaver Dam, Kentucky takes time out of its busy Strawberry Festival each year to honor the men and women of the armed forces.  The Salute to Veterans will feature Ron McClure and will be held on Monday, May 25th.

Small towns and cities across the United States hold smaller parades and celebrations to honor the veterans that have fought for and even died protecting the United States.  Make this Memorial Day holiday more than just another long weekend.
