Taking Twitter on Vacation

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Twitter is taking over the world.  It was the first to broadcast the plane crash in the Hudson River a few months back.  Even Oprah has learned how to tweet.  Now people are taking Twitter with them on vacation and it's getting a little out of hand.  It is important for vacationers to use a little consideration for readers when sharing about vacation experiences.

Rules to Help with Vacation Tweets:

Never spend more time tweeting about the vacation than experiencing the vacation - if you are going to stay online the whole time then save your money and stay HOME online.

Limit the updates to major events or attractions - minute by minute plays of all aspects of a vacation will wear on the most devoted reader.

Keep information useful to all readers - tweet about the best (or worse) places to eat, to visit or to stay so that followers gain something from reading your tweets.

Tweet about the things you would tweet about at home - skip the mundane and focus in on the major.

Create tweets that can stand alone - make the tweet memorable to everyone and not just about standing around waiting for the street lights to come on.

Using Twitter on your vacation should follow many of the same guidelines that it does when you are home.  Use each of your 140 characters wisely and be considerate of your followers.  Remember that they can not retweet your tweets if you don't leave enough characters.  Shorter tweets are always better.

Electronics being used on vacation may be taboo for some but for others it is almost like breathing.  Twitter has just taken that need to the next level by giving people an immediate format to be able to share their experiences with others.
