Avoiding Hidden Travel Fees
Thursday, June 18th, 2009
People everywhere are trying to save a few dollars. Those that are still able to take a vacation are no exception. Travelers are looking for the best deals, the greatest travel discounts and are learning to read the fine print (and between the lines). Discovering unexpected fees, taxes and charges that drive up the cost of a vacation can end up stealing all the joy that vacation brought.
It is important for travelers to learn how to protect themselves. Extra charges are going down in some industries and up in others but there are ways that you can be aware of the potential trouble and even get passed them altogether.
- Know the promises that have been made. If it is a verbal promise then follow up with something in writing confirming the verbal promise. Keep records of all that you have been promised for your vacation, who promised the prices and amenities and also the complete costs.
- Do some research. It is important to understand which charges are added to the price you are quoted and which ones you will be expected to pay on top of those prices. Many governments have added their own fees to the travel industry so you need to know where that money is coming from and when it will have to be paid.
- Ask at check in. Get a full listing of all amenities that cost extra. Many hotels have started charging for things like local calls and even internet access. You can determine what amenities you are willing to pay extra to use if you know the costs upfront.
- Get your bill early. Ask for a copy of your bill the night before you check out. This will give you plenty of time to review any charges, fees or other costs that may have been added to your room costs.
Saving money is always a good thing. Knowing any potential fees or hidden costs can help consumers choose the best travel plans and save the most money along the way.
