AirTran Changing Economic Trend in Airline Industry

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

Some companies are thriving despite the troubled economic times.  Travel centered industries have been reporting lower numbers over the last couple of years.  The world tourism industry has been calling for governments to step in and help boost the situation.

Much of the industry's troubles started with high fuel costs during the summer travel season of 2008.  Airline companies had already been struggling and extreme fuel prices caused many airline companies to reach the edge of bankruptcy.  This year the troubles have been compounded by falling world wide economies which have caused consumers to tighten their belts.

Despite all of the obvious troubles there are some companies that are finding ways to survive and even succeed during these times.  AirTran is one of those companies that are reporting that 2009 should be one of the best years in its history.  The airline company is predicting that it will turn a profit for this year even while its competitors are announcing more cuts in services and potential increases in costs to consumers.

AirTran has been working hard to create a low cost structure, which has helped it maintain a balance even as tourism and travel dollars decline.  The company has followed the trend of discounting tickets and cutting flights offered to consumers.  There has also been an increase in services in successful markets (like Milwaukee for AirTran).

AirTran is one of the smaller airline operators but is still considered a major United States carrier because of its nationwide presence.  Other airlines are looking at the more lucrative markets helping boost AirTran's profit margin. The added competition is sure to create smaller yields for the airline company.
