Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina is always a breathtaking adventure for visitors.  Each year the Gathering of Scottish Clans adds a taste of history, culture and heritage to the natural beauty of the region.

The annual Grandfather Mountain Highland Games will be held July 9 thru July 12, 2009 at MacRae Meadows on Grandfather Mountain.  This year's celebration will mark 53 years of the gathering.  The event was started as a way to promote an interest in traditional Scottish dancing, music, athletic endeavors and the Gaelic culture.  The funds raised through the event go towards a scholarship fund.

Accommodation in the region is relatively limited to a few lodges, inns and vacation rentals.  Room rates will start around $100 per night.  There are camping facilities available to those with a little more of an adventurous side.

Tickets to the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games can be purchased at the gate but cash is the only form of payment accepted.  Visitors that need to use debit or credit cards will have to purchase tickets at the GMHG Office in Linville, North Carolina.  A 4 day advanced ticket will cost $55 for adults and $25 for children.  Children under 5 are always free.

Grandfather Mountain is home to the Mile High Swinging Bridge that takes visitors across to Grandfather Mountain's Linville Peak.  The 228 foot Suspension bridge gives visitors the opportunity to experience some of the most spectacular views of the region.

The Grandfather Mountain Highland Games can be the perfect way to experience a taste of Scottish culture and heritage without the expense of traveling overseas.  It is a family oriented experience that is sure to have something for everyone in your group to enjoy.  Having the event hosted in such and amazing natural setting only adds to the opportunities and the excitement.
