Rising Gas Prices Mean Fewer Road Trips this Summer
Rising Gas Prices Mean Fewer Road Trips this Summer
As the cost of gas reaches $4 per gallon or more across the country, fewer Americans are choosing to take a road trip this season. The classic American road trip has long been a summer tradition for families and singles alike, and often was the 'last resort' option for travelers on a budget. However, more competitively priced flight tickets and more options for train and bus travel means fewer people will be jumping into their vehicles to enjoy a vacation this summer.
According to Steve Kar, the writer for the Roanoke Times, "I doubt gas will ever again be so cheap that most of us won't have to think twice about whether we can afford that next long road trip" (Source: Newsweek.com). Traversing the country on wheels is becoming increasingly expensive, and with the coinciding rise in food costs, stopping at area restaurants and diners may only add to the overall trip expenses. Factor in the costs of accommodations – or RV rentals if there's no car involved with the trip – and the final price for the trip may be just as much as a flight or train ride.
Rising gas prices may explain why more Americans are opting for the 'staycation' this year instead, a chance to settle for a backyard vacation – literally – with camping in the backyard or local parks, heading to a neighboring town and playing tourist for the day, or simply taking a sightseeing tour of the hometown for a fresh perspective. There are opportunities to explore state parks and recreational hot spots as a mini-getaway. Making one short trip to a nearby park and then traveling on foot may bring a new wave of travelers out of the road trip habit this season.
Staying off the road seems to be a sensible solution for saving money this season as cross country, interstate travel quickly loses its appeal.
