American Airlines Unveils Reduced Fares to New York

Monday, August 24th, 2009

In an effort to stimulate business and leisure travel during the slowing economy, American Airlines has introduced a new fare sale for flights between New York and Chicago, Miami, Dallas, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Tickets at the reduced rates went on sale on Wednesday, August 19 and the fare sale lasted only two days. All tickets sold during the sale period were valid for travel between September 15 and December 12, 2009.

American dropped its standard airfare to $69 each way from Miami to New York, $84 each way from Chicago to New York, $99 each way from Dallas-Fort Worth to New York, and $109 each way from San Francisco and Los Angeles to New York. Ticket prices were not all-inclusive of taxes, baggage fees and other fees. Blackout dates did apply, and a fee of $150 plus any difference in airfare would be imposed on any changes to the itinerary.

The fare sale was designed to attract some potentially interested travelers into booking their flights for the oncoming Fall season which is still expected to be slow in light of the economy.

Other airlines have already jumped into offering reduced fares to stimulate sales to all major destinations. JetBlue recently released its 'All-You-Can-Jet' sale where travelers can pay a single fee to book as many flights as they want to within a 30-day period. This 'flight pass' was designed primarily for business travelers that need to take several flights to major cities and destinations throughout a given month, and may or may not choose JetBlue as their carrier. JetBlue has recently suspended the promotion due to high demand. Southwest Airlines has also followed suit with reduced baggage fees and other incentives for today's budget-conscious traveler.

American Airlines offers the lowest prices for its sale tickets on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays for this promotional offer.
