Questions to Ask Your Cruise Agent Before You Book
Questions to Ask Your Cruise Agent Before You Book
How much is the fuel surcharge? Until five years ago, this cost was minimal and not really worth asking about. However, given the rising fuel costs of late, this charge is not only rising, but is now subject to an increase at any time. It's usually run per person or cabin, per day, and is important to note that this is charged on top of your regular fare.
Is there a dress code? On more formal cruise lines this is a very real consideration. Adult only cruises in particular may call for "country club casual" during the day, and more formal attire at night. Most family cruises are off the hook, but you will typically find on any cruise that shirts printed with graphic or offensive message are out of the question.
With whom can I discuss meal planning? The majority of cruises are well-equipped to handle special needs passengers, specifically those with severe food allergies. It remains important, however, that you find out what is required of you to ensure the cruise staff are well aware of any dietary restrictions you might have. Now is also a good time to find out if the meal schedule is planned in advance, as well as seating assignments. If you are traveling with a large group and want ensure you all dine together, an advance request will need to be made.
What package deals, if any, do you offer? This is an important one, if for no other reason than cost savings. Many offer airfare and pre/post-cruise hotel stays as an added convenience, one that translates into time and money saved for you. Often they will have a "companion hotel" in port that even let you leave your car for the duration of the cruise, saving big on extended parking fees.
What's your policy on deposits and refunds? This is usually detailed in the information provided to you by the booking agency, but it isn't always highlighted up front. As far as policies go, the cruise industry is fairly understanding, but will not generally refund the full cost once final payment has been made.
