latest cruise newsA typical cruise vacation that would last for several days or weeks is giving way to a new lineup of itineraries known as ‘microcruises’ designed specifically for the time-pressed traveler. Cruise vacations that would last for a week, ten days or even half the month may be too long for many travelers who just need a brief break for a weekend, or for those who are on a tight budget. According to a recent article in the Washington Post, the microcruise concept is now offered by Norweigan, Holland America, and Carnival cruise lines so that travelers can enjoy a one or two-night sailing from their preferred destination.

Some believe these types of trips are perfect for first-time cruise travelers as they give travelers a chance to enjoy the cruise experience without investing a lot of time and money into the trip. The commitment level is much lower than the traditional cruise, and travelers can even pick from a ‘mystery’ cruise vacation departing from popular hubs such as New York or Miami for a fun, last-minute getaway.

However, overnight sailing trips and microcruise adventures may not necessarily take place on the luxury liners and large, premium ships that many cruise travelers have become accustomed to. Smaller ships designed with fewer amenities and offering fewer services are typically used for the microcruise, allowing them to offer reduced rates for the budget-conscious traveler.

The microcruise adventures rarely include land-based activities such as city tours, beachfront excursions and outdoor explorations because of the shortage of time, so passengers spend most of their time on board the liner, socializing with other passengers, or simply relaxing on deck. The no-frills experience is designed primarily for people who just want to get away and try something new, without spending too much or committing too much time towards a vacation.
