Is Baltimore Worth the Trip
Is Baltimore Worth the Trip
The historic town of Baltimore was home to some of the most important events in the early chapters of the story of the United States. More recently, the city, like many such mid-sized urban areas in the US, has undergone a change for the worse. Though it is known as one of the most dangerous cities in America, Baltimore is nowhere near the no man's land it is made out the be in the press and on TV. Barry Levinson and David Simon are well-known filmmakers who have dramatized the criminal aspects of the city. But Baltimore is mostly a city hell-bent on hospitality, good times, good eating and history. There is plenty to see and do that doesn't involve danger.
1. Baltimore Harbor is a big tourist attraction. While locals often shun it because it does not show the city's true character, there is always something going on there: live music, fresh restaurants and plenty of shopping. Nearby sits Fort McHenry, the structure that Francis Scott Key watched as he wrote the Star Spangled Banner.
2. Baltimore is a city with a strong maritime history. The U.S.S. Constellation sits in the harbor. It is the last remaining workable sail-powered navy ship in the country. The Baltimore Maritime Museum has an impressive collection of old ships, including a World War II-era submarine and an authentic lighthouse. The National Aquarium, one of the best of its kind in the country, is located nearby.
3. Baltimore has plenty of interesting neighborhoods. Hampden and Federal Hill are two such areas. They are filled with bars, cafes and restaurants. John Waters fans will recognize Hampden from his film Cry Baby.
4. Lexington Market has vendors selling any kind of lunch food you could ask for. This is also an excellent place to sit and people-watch, as it gets crowded over the noon hour.
