Brazil’s largest and second most famous city is Sao Paulo. It does not have the beach scene or crazy Carnival parades of Rio, but it can more than hold its own in terms of things to do. In fact, tourists might find it safer and easier to get around in Sao Paulo than in Rio. The problem: it is not easy to get there from the US. However, with the height of the Southern Hemisphere’s summer just around the corner (November through March), some airlines are stepping up with promotions connecting east coast cities with Sao Paulo.

But what about once you get there? Like any big city, you can expect hotels and restaurants to be expensive. But there are some ways around a pricy stay in Sao Paulo. The city is filled with albeurges, budget hostels that cater to younger travelers. These accommodations can range from a bunk bed in a shared room with a shared bathroom to a private room with air conditioning. Of course, the price depends on the level of privacy. However all can be considered a good value when compared to some of the city’s glitzier inns and most are connected to nearby restaurants or markets with cheap eating options. Both Rua Augusta and Praca da Republica are good neighborhoods to start your hostel search.

Despite the fact that everyone talks about partying in Rio, Sao Paulo more than holds its own when it comes to fun after dark. Sure, some of the glitzy nightclubs can be quite expensive, but there are free concerts at Parque do Ibirapuera most summer nights and plenty of local watering holes.

Yes, Sao Paulo is a great place to visit. However, it is a city built around commerce, not culture. Rio is only a few hours away by train or bus; so experiencing both of Brazil’s great cities in one trip is easy to do.
