World's Best Island Destination

Travel and Leisure Magazine recently published its 2008 “best of” lists. The list is compiled by the editors of the magazine and is informed by a survey of T&L readers.

Islands are a big part of the world’s travel industry. Therefore, it is no surprise that the “best of” lists include a category for best islands. Here are Travel and Leisure’s top islands for 2008:

1. The Galapagos. Perhaps it’s surprising that the top island on the list is not of the palm tree and white sand variety. However, the wildlife viewing, including photo ops with the famous giant turtles, is second to none. Tourists come from around the globe to witness the unique creatures found on these rocky islands.

2. Bali is becoming the premiere beach destination in Asia. It has long been a haven for surfers and budget travelers, but is now moving to solidify its position in the mainstream. The recovery from the terrible 2002 bombings of the tourist area on Kuta Beach is complete and major construction projects are making Bali into a destination for both upscale jet-setters and budget beach bums.

3. Maui is a mainstay on many “best islands of the world” lists. It is one of the most popular islands in the world, known for its tropical beauty and resorts, but also for its lush and natural areas as well.

4. Kauai is probably the least known of Hawaii’s main islands. For that reason, it is the best place to go to escape the crowds, stretch your budget, and appreciate the natural beauty of the Hawaiian Islands.

5. Tasmania is another island that is not known for its sandy, tropical climes. Much like the Galapagos, Tasmania is known for its unique wildlife (Tasmanian Devil, anyone?) and rugged, picturesque topography. It is truly a unique place to visit.
