Cynthia Rowley Designs New United Airlines Uniforms

Fashion designer Cynthia Rowley has been contracted to design a new set of employee uniforms for United Airlines. All of United’s flight attendants, customer service representatives, ramp service and maintenance employees and pilots will be receiving new uniforms in the middle of 2011. The new design will reportedly enable better movement and provide more comfort.

Cynthia Rowley is famous for her sophisticated and flirty designer clothing, and will be giving the current United Airlines uniforms a much-needed makeover. President of United Airlines John Tague stated that, “New uniforms, with an improved look and feel, are a key investment in our company and our people, who are the face of United…It is one of the many investments we are making in our future…We have chosen Cynthia for her keen sense of style and for her commitment to involving our employees’ important input throughout the design process.”

Other leading designers who have been selected by competitor airlines for similar projects include Julien McDonald for British Airways, Gianfranco Ferre for Korean Air, Christian Lacroix for Air France , Pierre Cardin for Air India and Richard Tyler for Delta Airlines.

Rowley plans to spend about a month meeting with United employees to find out what their opinions about the current uniforms and what type of designs and style will be most fitting for the airlines’ brand image. She plans on creating a set of uniforms that will increase functionality and will use lightweight, breathable fabrics to provide extra comfort.

In her statement about the project, Rowley indicated that “travel is a huge part of my life...It’s such an exciting opportunity to design for United, a company with a rich history, expansive global reach and, like myself, Chicago roots.”
